The @MollyTavoletti Bagel Guide
Molly was first introduced to me by a mutual friend who said, "you have to meet Molly, she takes awesome bagel photos". Over a year later, those words stuck with me and I asked her to make this guide. What follows are her recommendations.
Now, for that New York style bagel, these guys know what’s up. They’re huge, they’re doughy, they’re made from that perfect NYC water. Not to mention Murray’s piles the cream cheese like no other. My go-to order here is the BEC, but I’ve never met a Murray’s bagel I didn’t like.
So I was a bit hesitant to include this, but the reality is when I lived on the West Side of lower Manhattan I was here A LOT. It’s kind of known as the NYU hot spot, and for good reason. It’s cheap AF and they will quite literally make ANYTHING you want. Peanut butter, jelly and banana? Yep. Bacon, avocado, over-medium egg? You bet. Greatest hangover cure in NYC.
Usually, I am a BEC kind of gal when it comes to my bagel orders, but every now and then I really crave cream cheese and lox. And Sadelle’s truly does it better than anyone. They’re giant New York style bagels filled with the most perfectly sliced salmon and scallion cream cheese. Sadelle’s also features a sit down restaurant, so you can have a full on brunch or grab a bagel on the go which is great.
Black Seed Bagels
Okay y’all. If you follow me, you’ve seen it. The heart. The soul. The Mecca. Black Seed Bagels. Now I’m a New Yorker through and through and admittedly these are NOT New York style bagels, but allow me to defend and explain my undying love for this place. Black Seed rolls out (pun absolutely intended) Montreal style bagels--so they’re a little smaller, a little crisper. They’re the perfect size to have for breakfast without the feeling of remaining full of dough until dinner. Firmly recommend the #3, the tobiko cream cheese is fire. And the #21, egg + avo + tomato, and if you’re feeling crazy add bacon.
This place. Okay, so I live in lower Manhattan but anytime I am even KINDA close to the Upper West Side, I fit in a trip to Absolute Bagels. The store itself is far from sexy or hip, but the bagels are incredible. Possibly some of the best in the city.
