Past Chelsea Market when you find yourself thinking that you couldn't possibly walk farther west, that my friends, that is where you will find the Mecca that is Toro. Pretty non-descript on the outside, you will walk up the steps into one of the most beautiful industrial chic restaurants in the city—which just so happened to be the former Nabisco factory, if you're like me and love a good historical factoid!
With a seriously delicious Spanish tapas styled menu, Co-Chef/Owners Ken Oringer and Jamie Bissonnette along with partners Doug Jacob and Will Malnatiit came together and refreshingly created a restaurant that doesn't with such high quality food doesn't take itself too seriously. I mean, it's not every day that you walk into a high end restaurant with ivy climbing the walls, a vast bar and gorgeous wooden tables to then look up upon the wall and see perfectly executed chalk art of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—TURTLE POWER! Not the only things served on the halfshell, their Paella Valenciana loaded with shrimp, mussels, clams, chorizo, chicken over calasparra rice is a must for your visit! Seeing the presentation in the photo I included here alone makes me want to go back and eat it all over again! There's something about a seafood paella that is always a must for me, add in chicken and you know I can't help myself.
Every time I visit Toro, the raving can be heard throughout the entire space! It's all about the Haburguesas! The second they hit the table, conversation halts, mouths are full and those Haburguesas are inhaled--they’ve created a drug! Like, serious addiction! Honestly, looking back on the menu, every dish feels like the star of the show. You can't order wrong!
So go, get your sangria on and order the whole menu—you’re welcome, in advance!
