IRISH SODA BREAD. These Saint Patrick’s Day loaves are soDA-licious!

St. Patrick’s Day has so much more to offer than leprechauns and green beer! Traditional Irish cuisine is steeped in history and filled with so many incredible flavors and textures. Soda bread is just one iconic example of the fantastic foods made on the Emerald Isle.

It’s so easy to make because it all comes together in just one bowl, it’s super quick because it doesn’t require any rising time, and it’s amazingly delicious because of the sweet raisins and fragrant caraway seeds.

There are endless ways to enjoy soda bread. Serve it sliced and slathered with salted Irish butter, toast it and use it as the bread for corned beef sandwiches, or turn it into French toast!

PRO-TIP.

You’ll know your bread is done if it sounds hollow when you tap on the bottom.

Instructions

TO MAKE YOUR IRISH SODA BREAD
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F with the rack positioned in the middle.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, caraway seeds, and raisins in a large bowl. Stir to evenly distribute the raisins and caraway seeds.
  4. Add the buttermilk and melted butter and stir until the dough is just combined.
  5. Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and dust the top lightly with flour. Gently knead to form a soft and less sticky dough.
  6. Divide the dough into two equal portions. Form each half into a 4- to 6-inch round and place on the prepared baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, cut an "X" across the top of each loaf.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake until golden brown, about 40 minutes.
  8. Transfer loaves to a rack and let cool completely.
