Ambiance

Chama Mama has a few locations now, but of course, I had to visit their OG flagship in Union Square. The block itself isn’t exactly glamorous — a bit more transient, if you will — but the second you step through the doors, it’s like being transported through a magic portal to Georgia (ahem, the country, not the state).

You’re immediately enveloped in warm, earthy tones and thoughtful design. The space blends modern elegance with rustic Georgian charm — think exposed brick, textured tiles, olive green velvet bench seating, wooden tables, soft lighting, and the gentle scent of fresh bread rising from the tone (a traditional clay oven), which you can spot through a large window the moment you enter.

Continue through the space and you’ll notice a gallery wall in the hallway that radiates Georgian pride and history — Slayyy King Tamar (who is actually a queen... a story absolutely worth diving into later, but back to the restaurant!). The hallway opens into The Alphabet Room, coined for the Georgian alphabet painted across the wall — I’m told this detail appears in all their locations. Love that!

And there’s more … a wood-clad outdoor space outfitted with ceiling fans and lush plants, perfect for lingering. The vibe is right for every moment — intimate without feeling crowded, lively but never loud. Whether you’re perched at the bar sipping a glass of Saperavi or tucked into a cozy booth with friends, the atmosphere is both inviting and transporting.

Chama Mama

Cuisine

The cuisine at Chama Mama is a bold and soulful celebration of Georgian flavors. Traditional dishes are honored with finesse — from the iconic, rich, and buttery khachapuri with molten cheese centers to juicy khinkali dumplings that burst with broth (Georgia is no longer just on my mind — those dumplings have claimed the space. Woah!).

I love this menu because it has something for everyone. It leans heavily on fresh herbs, slow-roasted meats, exciting traditional breads, and vibrant vegetable dishes that sing with spices like coriander and blue fenugreek. Whether you’re a carnivore, vegetarian, or somewhere in between, everyone can eat here and be extremely happy.

And if you’re someone who eats with their eyes first, you’re in for a treat — everything is beautifully presented and meant to be shared, making it perfect for a communal meal. Don’t skip the great selection of natural Georgian wines — they’re essential to the full experience.

What To Wear

The vibe strikes a balance between casual-cool and polished-chic. You’ll fit in perfectly with a dark denim and a stylish top, or a well-cut dress in the evening. If you’re going for lunch, something trend-forward and effortless feels right. It’s not a jackets-required kind of place, but a touch of fashion-forward flair would be on point. Think statement accessories or boots and you’ve nailed the aesthetic.

It’s the kind of spot where you want to dress like you’re going somewhere cool-special, not fancy-shmancy-special.

Kid Friendly

While Chama Mama doesn’t specifically market itself as a family restaurant, it’s surprisingly kid-friendly. The warm staff, spacious seating, and variety of shareable, comforting dishes make it approachable for younger diners — especially those open to new flavors. There’s no dedicated kids’ menu, but many dishes, like the cheesy khachapuri or grilled meats, are easy wins. High chairs are available, and the casual pace of service makes it comfortable for families.
